Mrs Van Tuyl is organising a Loose Materials system for our school, this is lots of materials for example: tyres, ropes, pallets, ladders, tubes, baskets, acorns, boxes, parachutes etc. The whole school had half an hour to be introduced to Loose Materials. Loose Materials are a great way to let your imagination flow wild, there is a massave variety of things to make and build. These are some examples of what P6 built: Cars, Tents, Shelters and Dens. Some of the younger children could use it for horse stables and space ships, shops and many other wonderful creations.
Of course playing with Loose materials does involve an element of saftey. The rules for safety for example are: no throwing any items, carry pallets with a partner (because they may be heavy especially for younger children), do not swing sticks about drag them or carry with a partner, and roll tyres do not try to carry them...
We were building a den using pallets, tyres, ropes, parachutes, a ladder and boxes we also used acorns for decoration. There also is toys, acorns, baskets and soft balls that can also be used for decoration.
We are all looking forward to when Loose Materials become official in our school, we will have a rota and different classes will get the Loose Materials depending on the day or week. We are also looking forward to playing with the Loose Materials because you can do what ever you want as long as you follow the rules. Loose materials can be included in many games like horsey and camping in the middle of nowhere with washed up items and you could have a fake fire for the younger children.
